Employee Appreciation Day is March 3rd, prepare now!

While you likely recognize your employees more than just one day of the year, this “holiday” is a good time to incorporate appreciation into your organization (at all levels).

Employee Appreciation Day is a great excuse to dote on your employees, and it benefits the company in more ways than one.

You don’t have to take our word for it, though. Gallup dives headfirst into the numbers to prove employee recognition isn’t one-size-fits-all and that it’s a key component of attracting and retaining your top performers.

IBM is constantly researching ways to improve companies, here is what they have to say about the importance of recognizing employees, particularly through multiple channels. View the full study from IBM

  • The engagement level of employees who receive recognition is almost three times higher than the engagement level of those who do not.
  • Workers who receive recognition are less likely to quit. Without recognition, about half (51 percent) of surveyed employees say they intend to leave.
  • Employees whose organizations use multiple communication channels for recognition are more likely to feel appreciated and show a higher level of employee engagement.
  • The findings imply that technologies such as social and mobile are strong candidates for the effective delivery of recognition as they offer interactive, frequent and immediate communication via multiple channels.

As you can see, whether the recognition is public through a message to all employees, or a personal “Thank you for your hard work” note, a little gratitude can go a long way in inspiring your employees to be invested in the success of your company.

We’ve also gathered a comprehensive list of activities you can use with small to large teams, and in one or many locations.

  • Prime parking spot
  • Cafeteria coupon
  • Recognition points
  • Contests/drawing
  • Theme party — Sundae bar, catered lunch, Hawaiian, St Patrick’s Day, chili cook-off, etc.
  • Awards ceremony for safety, culture, organizational, most valuable employee, etc.
  • Award an extra break or extra paid day off
  • Handwritten thank you notes
  • Get to know your employees. Ask them random and bizarre questions about themselves to lighten the mood, and create a more friendly environment.
  • Employees love showing off their pets. Have them bring in a photo of a current or past pet. Post the photos in the team area, and see who can guess which pet belongs to which employee.
  • Create custom “baseball cards” for your employees. Include a photo and statistic (e.g., Worked 12 months without being absent).
  • Recognize employees externally — employee spotlight on social media and/or newsletter.
  • After an employee has left for the day, stick a candy bar, their favorite snack, or treat in their workspace. They’ll be able to start the next day off on the right foot after they’ve found their surprise.
  • Sports or theater ticket giveaway — seats that the company owns or a gift certificate
  • Create a funny, inexpensive “trophy” that rotates around the different workspaces of employees
  • On-site wellness checks and fitness classes
  • Monthly birthday dessert potluck
  • Peer recognition program
