Is your company’s hourly worker communication exposing you to risk?

Internal communications shouldn’t be a security risk for your company. But research shows there’s a good chance it is.

According to our report, Profile of the Hourly Worker, half of all hourly workers are not given a company email account. Yet, 77 percent of hourly workers say they use email for general communication, including work-related communication, at least several times per week or day.

How Frequently Do You Use Email For General Communication

Further exploration into the hourly worker’s communications is even more concerning. When asked, “How often do you use your personal email address for work communication?”, 18 percent said “Often,” and 24 percent said, “Sometimes.” That’s 42 percent of a workforce communicating with or on behalf of their company where the company has no documentation, control or security.

But email is just the tip of the risk iceberg for companies communicating with their hourly workforces. When hourly workers were asked what methods their company typically uses to communicate new policies and procedures, 37 percent said via personal email, but 25 percent said via text message. Would you believe 16 percent said via Facebook group?

Without a private, secure communications platform, a company cannot guarantee safety, security, privacy or compliance with many regulatory requirements for company interactions
. When 50 percent of your workforce isn’t given company email addresses, and when 61 percent of them don’t have traditional work environments where company email is an efficient mechanism for communications, you have to look to mobile devices and apps.

As we’ve illustrated, 84 percent of hourly workers use smartphones. Mobile apps built for internal communications — ones that provide messaging and collaboration tools, file and document access and sharing features, schedule and shift functionalities, and the necessary safety, security, privacy and compliance standards — are perfect solutions for mitigating this company risk.
