Mobile can transform your communications, productivity and engagement

During the recent HR Technology Conference in Chicago, we conducted our third mobile trends survey. The first two surveys took place at the national SHRM conference in June and the Ragan Communications Summit in September.

We enjoy the opportunity to speak to practitioners one-on-one at these conferences. We hear candid input on their communication challenges and understand why mobile is or isn’t on their radar. For most, the number one challenge is measurement — knowing whether or not a message was heard, read and understood.

We conducted our survey to gather quantitative data on mobile trends in employee communications. To see how a mostly consumer channel is (slowly) infiltrating the internal channels for connecting and engaging with employees.

2016 Employee Communication Trends

Mobile Communication Trends

While employers are slowly adapting to the mobile behaviors of their workforce, we can see (and hear) that moving towards digital channels for communication is on the rise.

  • 59% of attendees surveyed are not able to measure employee communications. It’s astonishing the amount of resources and cost that is invested into internal communications, yet there is no measurement in place to know if the effort was effective or not. The outlier in these results is the Ragan conference — 60% of the attendees are able to measure communications. Ragan attendees are mostly communications directors and managers. They tend to be more familiar and understand the importance of measurement because of their direct and indirect ties to marketing. The possibilities to gain insights from communications will increase rapidly as companies adopt digital platforms.
  • Half of all companies know their employee’s preferences for communications. While this may seem low, it does show progress. HR and communication directors are noticing the importance of knowing their audience — programs and announcements are much more successful when you’re using the channels and formats that resonate with employees.
  • 44% of attendees are considering a mobile app for employee communications. We were pleased to hear that some attendees are looking into mobile to improve their reach and engagement with employees. Attendees are surprised to learn that 75%+ of all US adults own smartphones and that employees are very willing to use their personal device for off-site access to messaging and files.
