#MobileChat No. 88 – Mobile Music Matters

[UPDATE: View the Mobile Music Matters Storify for a recap of the live Q&A]

The iPod was far more than “1,000 songs in your pocket”… It was the catalyst that ignited a new generation of music creation, distribution, and consumption.

The music industry, just like every other area of life, continues to witness radical changes caused by digital and mobile. Business opponents of the shift decry the potential for piracy, potential loss of audio fidelity (caused by downloading/streaming instead of hard copy CDs), but in many ways, the biggest challenge for the music industry with the new digital economy is changing revenue models.

And to be far, it is an industry that has seen drastic changes in the past 10 years. Both music labels and artists have been presented with new challenges for how to monetize for their creative efforts.

On the other side of the debate, supporters of the ongoing evolution of digital music praise the ability to listen to music wherever they are. No longer are people limited to the car radio, a cassette mix-tape (that’s like a Playlist for those unfamiliar) or a single CD in a walkman. Additionally, musicians now have a wide array of digitally advanced tools to create and mix music.

This reality has drastically lowered the entry bar to create and publish music, which in turn, is leading to a new surge of self-published songs and albums.

Join us Wednesday, May 21st from 9-10pm ET as we chat about the state of digital music and how mobile devices and apps are accelerating this trend. We’ll also be discussing mobile apps for both music creation and consumption. Have a favorite one? We’d love to hear about it!
