Shel Holtz, well-known employee engagement speaker and consultant, kicked off the virtual webinar by sharing trends in mobile that indicate the importance of incorporating mobile into any communications strategy.
The smartphone is a digital swiss army knife — it provides consumers with communications, computing, research, photography, and video at their fingertips. There are a growing number of consumers that no longer have a desktop. Mobile users surpassed desktop users two years ago and the numbers will continue to rise as the smartphone and tablet are capable of all important computing needs.
This is likely not big news to you. You see people everywhere with their faces buried in their smartphone, even more so with the instant craze of Pokemon Go. So, why are internal communications pushing employees to web pages, bulletin boards and kiosks? It’s not where they are.
Communicators should be accommodating the interest and need of employees in the moment, when they need something, provide them the accessibility. Accommodate their behavior by making communications available in real-time and on mobile.
Your best opportunity is one-to-one engagement — the ability to engage an individual or small group about a topic that is specific to them. Broadcast messaging is not engaging, and it’s not personal. If first shift is having a meeting at 10 am, send the message to only first shift not all employees.
Shel summarized his presentation, “You have to make time for thoughtful communication. Pay attention to what your audience is using. The idea that employees will go to a website to get news is ridiculous. I predict that internal communications is going mobile in the next 5 years!”
