I spent nearly 12 years of my life playing football. I lived it. Breathed it. Loved it. That’s one of the reasons that I have classified myself as a “football devotee” in my Twitter bio.
One task that I spent hours each week doing, especially in college and during arena football, was watching practice and game film. We would watch film to learn strategy, critique our technique, and receive a “grade” based on our performance during the game. Watching film of myself wasn’t always easy – especially when I didn’t perform as well as I would have liked; yet, it forced me to see where and how I could improve my play. In competitive sports, even the slightest changes to technique can be the difference in making the tackle, completing the lift, or sinking that 30′ putt.
To tell us what’s new in the world of on-the-spot video analysis for athletes, we asked Coach’s Eye to guest on the next #MobileChat. Coach’s Eye is a mobile app which helps athletes and coaches develop their skills by being able to visually coach. Their motto is: “Seeing is Believing”, and you can’t change what you can’t see.
This is a key example of how mobile can be a innovative tool for the sports industry. While I remember watching lots of film during my football days, it was always while sitting in a meeting room after practice or game. There wasn’t on-the-spot visual coaching while I was still in my football gear. Hearing, seeing, and being able to make an immediate change to a sports technique while still practicing is a disruptive use of mobile technology.
